Why I love freelancing

Monday, November 16th, 2009

My activity on the blog was pretty scarce lately so you might not know about my new professional situation. 3 months ago the radio station I have worked for the past 3 years closed its local studio and I was fired. Recession is serious in Romania too and mass-media is one of the most affected areas. I got a possible job invitation at another radio station for half the wage and double the workload. Not pretty at all.

The last 10 years of my life have been spent doing radio shows. I loved this so much. It was my dream job and I got it at 20. Now I am over 30 and it looks like some changes needed to be done.

Aside working in the media, 7 years ago I started web design. One site, another one, you learn how to design a layout, code it, in no time you realize you kinda have some skills and experience. And then you work more, you start earning some dollars and consider a possible fulltime job. And still you have that nice radio job, well paid, coleagues, fun. And just develop your tiny web business while still relying heavily on the radio wage.

Well, it’s all gone now. My changes in the media are small. Well, I can work for 200 USD a month or can earn this money on my own. I chose to freelance fulltime now. It’s been 3 months and I LOVE IT. Here is why:

  • no more pesky coleagues or bosses. Well, I can’t say I had a bad relation with any of them, but there were times I didn’t like how someone spoke to me or the fact some used to “backstab” me. Yes, it’s normal at most jobs, even the fun ones as in the radio business.
  • I don’t have to dress “nice” every day. I have to admit I don’t like wearing “fancy” stuff, even if I am a woman and some think I should. I can work in my pijamas or some tshirt/pants “home version” and not have to worry about my clothing.
  • My car doesn’t need so much fuel. Having to drive each day to work and fro made my monthly budget lose money on the fuel. Now my car is parked outside and my “trips” in the city are less frequent. Of course, I “feel” the increase in my savings.
  • I make my schedule, my time is MINE. I was sick for some days. I didn’t work and recovered. We wanted to visit Berlin, we went. No worries about not getting permission to leave the job, “do I have enough vacation days”, “do I need to cut off my journey to solve some job issues” .. My time is well spent or not, it all depends on me. As a freelancer and web designer I need to work based on deadlines. As long as I respect this, I can decide on how to spend my spare time, what workload to take etc.
  • I earn FOR ME. All the money I get is mine. Of course there are taxes, but I am the one earning the “bucks”, taking the profits and having to benefit from all.

Freelancing does have its risks. You depend on your clients, you need to work A LOT to succeed, but, with good organization and budgeting you cannot but succeed. For me these last 3 months have been a blast. I do work immensly, I have to keep an eye on my spendings, especially since there’s no more wages to rely on, but it’s the best thing in my life. My social life is better, I can meet my friends, I can offer my clients better meeting hours (since I don’t have a strict schedule), I can go on trips or just take a day off.

Freelance sites … is there anything worth using?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Since I am self-employed right now (3 weeks ago the radio station I worked for closed) and have a lot of time on my hands, I was trying to see what more I can do as a designer/content creator.

So I started some accounts on some ‘top’ freelance sites. Right now I have a sour taste in my mouth.

elance.com - started the account some time ago, logged in (of course after losing the pass and username). Good thing I still use that email address. I was using the free option and selected some time ago the content creation category. Today I saw something cool in the design area and wanted to bid. Nope, can’t do this. I need to update my profile and after some hours already it’s not changed. The “premium” price for the upgrade is pretty decent, but everything moves TOO SLOW for me. I want to make changes and pay (if needed) or just see the changes right away, if I make them on the free account.

guru.com - FRUSTRATING. I have spent almost 2 hours tweaking my darn profile with all the info needed and when I wanted to see what’s for me to bid on, ONLY premium member solutions. It’s impossible for me to grasp how such a huge site can’t offer 1 lousy project for a regular user. All the paid options are VERY expensive, especially for a beginner account. I want to test and see some projects, do some work etc. Not pay 150 USD and then realize it’s useless to me. I have deleted my account. Nobody will pay me for those 2 wasted hours though.

getafreelancer.com - I think so far is the best one I am using. Can’t say I am desperatelly in love with it, but it seems to offer me a fair share of possible jobs and maybe I’ll be able to make some pocket money out of it. Should I be pleased, I might upgrade the account.

What other freelancer job sites whould you recommend? I am a designer/article writer, no programming experience though.

Should you have your own experiences in this, please do share them. I’d love knowing if you were pleased with these sites.

Friends and relatives - to work with them or not?

I started my small web business 2 years ago. I had to save money for few months to be able to pay for all the taxes to establish my small “web entity” into a real business one. Work was hard, as it still is, but the results started showing. My family had some more money for the every day life, while I was able to spend some more online to get better hosting plans, maybe a new script for a new site etc.

As you can imagine most of the people who knew me started getting ideas. The ‘best” one came from a relative who doesn’t even call to tell me happy birthday when he should do this, but who was interested in getting into MY business as soon as he heard about my new status.

As an associate.

Go get a loan for your business. Are you kidding me?

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Since I am back into the blogging business I also try to find interesting articles to read and (believe it or not) it’s pretty hard. Everyone and his cat has an Entrecard / Twitter / Digg / Adsense etc. blog to teach you how to get maximum profit / visits / clicks or debate how to make money online in blogs that don’t earn 2 bucks a month. Yeah, I am mean right now since I’m tired of reading about “millionairs” and “get rich yesterday” gurus.

Still .. we’re not talking about the low quality of information or the fact it takes 10 spam blogs to find a good one, but we’re gonna chat a bit about the advice I read in one of the few decent ones I laid eyes on these days: don’t stay on a small budget or “tight money”, but go there and find a good loan for your business.

What do you do when your client is WRONG?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I think one of the hardest moments for me as a brand new web designer with my first client to serve was mustering the courage to discuss all kinds of aspects, especially when my client seemed to be the “know it all” type. Frustration was what I felt and I just didn’t know what to do: tell my client he’s totally off when it comes to that matter or just “suck it up” and do what I am told to?

There is a time when you need to ask yourself: “Do I tell my clients they are wrong? And how do I do this?”

Many people who had more experience in dealing with clients told me to shut up, take the money and never mind the problem. Some claimed it’s a bad strategy to point to your client he’s wrong, that your client might lose respect in you and trust in your services.
