Video blogs: 5 reasons for me to not create any

I got this idea after seeing some projects like this and realizing I really dislike them. I am not talking here only about blogs that “borrow” content from youtube since I don’t waste too much time on such things. I am also referring here to blog posts created by the author in a video form. As cool as it might this sound I am still not convinced I would want to create such a project. Here are some reasons:

1. I don’t stay too much in them myself. I don’t know why I really don’t like video blogs or even podcasts. I agree that many of them are of excellent quality and really interesting, it’s just .. I don’t like watching or listening to the information. I assume there are others who are as “weird” as I am, so this already makes me think twice about having a video blog.

2. It’s possible that my videos cannot be seen .. I have some restrictions at work for instance when it comes to flash and other plugins. They are not installed and I cannot install them since we don’t have admin priviledges. This situation is not singular, it might also leave some of my visitors in front of a video they cannot watch.

3. The text is always easier to “scan”. I don’t know how others use a site, but I “scan” the content. And I look in it for the things that I am interested in, the paragraphs that really give me the information I need. This is how I can see if it’s really worth reading in the end, if not, I am gone. A text can be read like this and I can convince my reader in just seconds that I really know what I am talking about.

4. My texts are SEO friendly. I have traffic from google and other search engines. They pick any word I write and give me visitors. I think it’s a tad harder with a video to do the same thing, unless you’re rewriting the entire text in a title tag or an alt tag.

5. I am not that beautiful. .. well, it’s true. I am not such a beautiful woman to attract my visitors with my looks, so I have to rely on my texts only.

These would be my 5 reasons for not creating a video blog. Maybe in some months/years. Here is a ‘trend’ I am not thinking about, maybe a missed opportunity, but it is really not what I want from a blog.

  1. [...] have moved the article to our new blog. Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and [...]

  2. We’re the same. We don’t have the time to sit through a video. We also prefer scanning text.

As bloggers imparting information, we must also be considerate of those who are on dial-up.

    Thanks.

  3. Yeah, i get really annoyed when i cannot scan information. video keeps you captive. people like options. it’s like watching the news when they keep you hanging on something they keep promising they will show you, but not telling you when. i really hate that. and i agree about the seo component. that is a huge negative in my mind. and honestly, i just don’t want to take the time to produce the thing when i could just as easily present it in text format. I think video is good when demonstrating something that is really hard to describe - like “this is how i build a hydrogen generator” it was the first thing that came to mind ;^)
