Entrecard is dead! Or will be pretty soon …

I’ve known Entrecard since they had few hundreds of blogs listed. I’ve been one of the early adopters and it’s been a super ride with it back then. The quality control was very strong, as it is with any new venture that needs to attract customers, the blogs listed there were so-so, with more quality blogs than spammy ones though. That was the time I discovered Ben Barden and he’s an excellent blogger, no questions asked. Well, imagine, many of the blogs listed there were of this quality. Clicking on the cards was a pleasure, since I always knew at … Continue reading

    10 things I REALLY hate – online

After some “serious” articles about blogging and making money online, it’s time for us to kick back and just share some more personal feelings. We’re all web professionals or just people who use the internet on a daily basis, otherwise it would be hard to believe you were able to get here. In our daily “web travels” we come to things we absolutely love and others we’d be happy without. Since I have over a decade of internet addiction and have seen many things since now, I’d like to share with you my own “hate” list. SPAM – whether it’s … Continue reading

What does your site bring to the table?

My first site was started 8 years ago. I had absolutely no clue about how to design a site (thank god for the crappy Front Page that allowed me to put my first ideas online, with it’s bloated code and all its faults), just wanted to share some ideas and the information I was absorbing like a sponge. Had 3 months of karate training and in Romania there was no site that would actually advise you in this topic. So, I had to create a site that would allow me to share my ideas about this and all the things … Continue reading

Paying for hosting: ways to waste money

One of the first things we need to take into account when creating a site is the server it will stay on. Chosing the perfect solution is pretty hard and there are many ways one can lose money out of this deal. 1. You get the biggest plan possible. I had many clients who were “shocked” to hear I won’t host their small presentation site on a dedicated server. It took me minutes to convince them it’s better to start small since I can always increase resources and they’d pay more when they’d actually need to. Yes, I am that … Continue reading

Are we still professionals if we are not “jack of all trades”?

Few months ago a disgruntled member commented that we cannot consider ourselves professionals if we use scripts or even hosting provided by a third party. How dare we call ourselves this if we use other people’s work into building our projects. Are we still professionals if we are not “jack of all trades”? In a way we are this “jack” since most of us know a bit of everything: we can design in Photoshop, maybe Flash too, we know how to put the design in HTML/CSS, we know how to do SEO on the site, how to monetize, how to … Continue reading

Learn when to take a break!

As you can see here, I haven’t updated the blog in more than 4 weeks now. Apologies to those who came here to find something new and saw the same article for such long time All this time I worked. Had some client sites to finish (still have), worked on some of the sites in the network, wrote some articles in my other blogs. I would like to say I took a long break, but it wasn’t the case. Still I thought about this the only day I really ignored ALL work and had fun. Yes, I wasted one day … Continue reading

    Orthodontics-Today.com

Yes, another site. I have braces. Well, not the “classic” type anymore (wore Damon braces for 7 months on my lateral teeth), but Invisalign (those plastic buggers you put on your teeth and expect them to get straight I have done a lot of reading all these months, came up with a site for the Romanian orthodontics patients and now I started a blog like site about Orthodontics for the international public. It’s called Orthodontics Today (cheesy, I know) and I’ll write there articles about this topic. And my own experience too. Didn’t get to do too much styling .. … Continue reading

StockExpert: more money for royalty free images

From time to time I need images for my sites or for my clients’ designs. I like using StockExchgange most of the time (a free photos site). Still, sometimes I need a better looking image and I come to stockexpert.com for that image. The good thing is that the images would cost 1 USD, a small price when we think about the hundreds of dollars we can get for a design. I have been using the site for 1 year I think and was able to get some pretty decent images for 1 USD. All with a nice resolution (just … Continue reading

Content is King: save yourself from a checkmate

I know you got sick and tired of hearing the same thing: “content is king”, but let me tell you ONCE again, you have NO idea how true this is. A good site is important for us because of the GOOD UNIQUE content, because it’s useful and we need all those informational articles in order to be able to understand a topic and gain as much knowledge as possible. A good content is now one of the most sought for commodities on the web. People pay good money for unique articles, for re-writing (when they can’t hire professionals or are … Continue reading

Learn web design by doing it!

I own several webmaster related forums (both in English and Romanian) and maybe because I am the admin and have the highest post count people consider me to be something like a “yoda” and direct the questions to me. Of course there are other members who are as good as I am in this and some are way better, but I seem to attract the questions like a huge eye-glasses wearing magnet. One of the most important questions in many members minds is “How can I learn web design?”. We have a lot of possible ways to learn this, there … Continue reading
