I was responding to some topics lately about blogs and I recall at least 2-3 instances the topic was about the most famous bloggers and their uber blogs. I know them and visited them. And still .. I am shocked to see so many people discuss about them in such nice ways. With due respect to such people who made the blogging world what it is today .. some of the blogs are totally uninteresting to me. Weird .. I know.
I hear people chat about johnchow, techcrunch, shoemoney and other assorted names in awe about how nice and interesting the stuff there is. I visited and tried to read them in another day too .. may I am having a bad hair day or something.
Still… no .. no sweet taste in my mouth. Am I a total idiot? How can I not like them when thousands of people like them? Why do I like problogger and some small blogs that are far from being famous? I tried to think more about this and here are some of my reasons:
1. First, I don’t like herds. If people worship something like sheep because they know others think it’s cool and not because THEY feel this I just go nuts. A lot of the hype on some blogs is just .. hype. A very good promotion effort some good content (they won’t become famous with crappy posts) and consistency.
Plus some people to praise them and keep on praising them even when the content is less quality. Maybe they are for that back link on the comments page, who knows. There are some very well known blogs I visited because everyone talks about them, but that didn’t make me come back again.
2. What I don’t like in some HUGE blogs is that they don’t remove the nofollow tag in the links. That’s not a nice thing to do, but why worry when you have thousands of subscribers and a huge income? Who cares about the idiots who comment, eh?
3. I don’t like to read tech news and other assorted crap. For Goodness sake I am tired of reading about Windows Vista new plugin or whatever, about the iPhone and iGocrazy and all these topics. If I want to read about a computer or a piece of software I go to the specialized sites, not BLOGS. Ufff
4. I am glad people have a life and like to share their pics and stories in their web development blog. I am glad, but I dislike those posts. I come to that blog to read about a new SEO technique or a nice way to solve a forum issue … not to read about the blogger’s 20 days vacation on the Easter Isles or wherever he was able to go. Good for the people who can still go out and have fun, but please make a personal life blog and share your feelings and keep that darn tech blog clean.
5. I dislike too many posts that are made just for the sake of it. I dislike posts that gather links and ideas from others and as weird as it might seem some of the biggest bloggers sometimes do this .. they read a nice article and comment it a bit, plus some links and here we go .. another blog entry.
There are TOO MANY blogs that repeat the same stuff. I like to see something new. Even crazy rants like this one, getting against the hype and just having a say. The blog is yours, stop linking and commenting .. I don’t care that a famous blogger makes 20-50 posts a day or whatever he can come up with. I would like to read 1 post/week, but with some fresh content and not repeating the same stuff I already read in other 20 blogs.
6. Advertising till you get blind. I know we have the so called “ad blindness”.. we’re web designers, we kinda know them. I have nothing against some ads on a blog. The guy worked like crazy to get into such a nice position and effort must be repaid. Still some have so many banners and affiliate links I just want to scream. Even if I do support advertising as a good way to keep something awesome going, too much of it makes me wanna leave.
7. Blogs on a white background… told you I am having a bad hair day .. just noticed that no matter how famous or not a blog is I don’t like seeing white only background blogs. They look unorganized to me .. even a small 1 pixel border around the content would make it look better
That kinda sums it up. Now I am waiting to be shot or tortured till I say I like those star blogs. Till then, I will visit the ones I really enjoy and not the ones people say I should. Till tomorrow .. kisses.
If a hosting company is offering the cheapest domain name along with quality marketing opportunities including email marketing, it is a good deal.

I "tweet" interesting links and useful information only. Can't believe it?
simple is better.

I agree with almost everything you are saying.
I have looked at the hyped blogs, and wondered why on earth they have got where they are. A case of the emperor’s new clothes I think. I am fed up with tech blogs and so many ads I can’t find the posts (sometimes both at the same time). I don’t like “white” blogs but also really do find blogs with a black background a real problem. I’m also bored with make money by blogging blogs, but that’s not my aim.
I do give links from original sources in my posts wherever possible because personally I don’t like reading reports about something I can’t check. I’m not sure if that’s what you mean.
As for personal posts, I suppose that depends on the type of blog, but I don’t mind them. My “niche”, if it’s that, is the environment in developing countries, especially Africa and more especially women. One American reader of mine said something about unremitting gloom, and being grateful for the occasional lighter post, so I provide them!

I can only disagree on #5. But not on the number of posts, some blogs post too much, that’s so true.
But I do like some posts with a few great links on the same subject now and then, it’s like having a Personal Googler just for you. It’s more something they give me than something I have to work on. I like that.
For the other points: you couldn’t be more correct.
I Review You’s last blog post..Blog Badly
Darren Rowse not so famous? ProBlogger was already THE bloggers’ blog even before Chow set-out to to make it to the top of of th make-money-online heap.
BTW, it’s best to “study” how chow and shoemaker blog rather than read and follow whatever the write.
My other faves, aside from Darren, are Garry Conn and Dosh Dosh.
Thanks.

Hey Ramona, I know what you’re saying. I think that the sheer momentum the big guys have in having posted mass amounts of content over the years is kind of the main thing that makes their blogs pull so much traffic and people obviously try to be nice so they might be shined upon by the “blogging gods”
I do like seth godin’s blog – always very insightful, also problogger as well..
With #7, do you mean blogs that have a white background and white sidebars as well? Here, you have a white background for your posts, but you have more colours than just white. I have a header and sidebar that aren’t white, but the page is white. Where do you draw the line here?
Ben Barden’s last blog post..Is daily posting necessary?
Ramona, I completely understand your position. As a person who is new to the whole blogging universe I find it difficult to search for anything interesting without running into the aforementioned sites.
I think the thing that most people find interesting or awe inspiring about John Chow and Shoemoney is that they’ve been successful in their blogging endeavors. I think it’s really cool that they’ve been able to make a lot of money off their blogs, but it’s also pretty rude to show the world your six figure check from AdSense too.
Oh yeah…and white backgrounds are too vanilla!
Bryan’s last blog post..Marketing Contest Gone Wild!
I don’t like the star blogs because they don’t really have any content. All they do is post about contests they have, food they ate that day, or a new affiliate review… gets boring after a while.

Hello. Ramona, I really love your name. It is my favourite childhood story book name.
Had never met a real Ramona before though. ^^~~ Oh yes, I totally agree with you. SOmetimes the Star Blogs did deserve the name and fame. Some …just sucks…
Personally I don’t understand how they become famous or even win blog awards. They post whatever I post. Share my day, talk about my cats, gossip about my friends and my love life. Well…who knows. Anyway, your blog is really nice, tidy and professional looking. Love it.

I agree with what you have said. The star blogs many times collect ideas from other small blogs and then hog the limelight

Star blogs are not really exist, no stars makes blog in their full activity
Of course, I too agree with your all point Ramona. It hasitates the users at the time of displaying unwanted content instead of required/searched content Thanx for sharing ur information.
I totally agree.
Such blogs, even when they write mispelling, bad content, they get hype because, hey, everybody knows it.
Its such a silly thing, people dont even go to blog and reads the entire post, just puts a comment saying: “Hey, I love your blog.”
Cut the crap.
